The Resilient Scallop Shell canvas
The Scallop, a stainless steel sculpture by Maggi Hambling, stands tall on Aldeburgh's beach, north of the town center. Dedicated to Benjamin Britten, it is made up of two interlocking scallop shells, each broken. The upright shell bears the words, "I hear those voices that will not be drowned." The piece is a tribute to the composer's love for the sea and the resilience of the human spirit.
