New Forth Crossing - 13 June 2012 picture board
The first of the massive steel caissons (21.1m tall x 23m diameter) is being sited in the River Forth at the location of the North Tower for the New Forth Bridge. When fully sunk in place, its contact with the rock will be sealed and the sediment from inside the caisson excavated before it is filled with special underwater concrete to form the base of the foundations. An even larger caisson (30m tall x 23m diameter) is almost ready to be sited for the South Tower support.
