The Chateau de Comtal, Carcassonne canvas
An ancient stronghold since Roman times, Carcassonne in the Aude region of France is now a World Heritage Site. The Chateau de Comtal, owned by Raymond Roger de Trencavel in the eleventh century was the last stronghold of the Cathar dynasty. Carcassonne was restored in the mid 19th century by Violet le Duc.
