Newcastle Swing Bridge canvas
The Swing Bridge is the fourth bridge on the Tyne and was desiged by John Ure with additional contribution by Sir W. G Armstrong and Co. Work began on the bridge on the 23rd September 1868 and the Swing Bridge opened for road traffic on the 1th June 1876, the first swing opening being on the 17th July for the Italian vessel Europa which continued up the river to the Elswick works to pick up a huge gun for the Italian Government. The bridge cost a total of £288,000
