Malmesbury Abbey canvas
The Abbey at Malmesbury in North Wiltshire. The Abbey is the focal point of the town which has strong Saxon origins. King Aethelstan was buried here in AD941. An obvious feature of the building is that it is partly ruined. This didn't happen at the time of the Dissolution - it partly collapsed during a great storm followed by a further collapse around 1550. By that time the Abbey had been re-designated as a parish church - the role it has had since then.
