The oystercatcher is a robust, contrasting black and white wading bird gracing the rock-strewn coast. Its strikingly long, vibrant orange-red beak and reddish-pink legs provide an intriguing contrast. In flight, it displays a broad, gleaming white wing-stripe, a deep black tail and a white rump that seamlessly extends as a V between its wings. Its diet consisting mainly of cockles makes the population susceptible if cockle habitats are excessively harvested.
