The Castle and Cathedral of Newcastle upon Tyne canvas
The 'new' castle on the River Tyne was built on the site of a medieval fortification was commissioned by Henry II in 1168 and completed in 1177 at a cost of £1144 ! It is seen here with the cathedral church of St Nicholas which began life as a parish church in 1091.
