View from the Limestone Pavement at Malham canvas
Limestone pavements are large expanses of exposed limestone rock, often characterized by cracks or fissures known as "grikes" and blocks of limestone in between called "clints." The formation of Malham Limestone began over 300 million years ago when the area was covered by a shallow tropical sea. Over time, layers of marine organisms and sediments accumulated, resulting in the formation of limestone. The pavements we see today are the result of millions of years of erosion and weathering.
