Built on a rocky outcrop above the sand dunes of the Northumberland coast, Bamburgh Castle dates back to around 420 AD when it was a Celtic / Britton fort becoming an Anglo Saxon castle in 590. The Vikings destroyed the castle in 993 and eventually became the property of King Henry II.
