Young Ralph Cross, North York Moors canvas
Part, at least, of this gritstone cross is thought to date back to the 12th Century when the North York Moors had no roads and the stone crosses acted as waymarkers to help people find their way on the heather moorlands. There are several tales connected with the cross including the suggestion that the cross marks the resting place of a nun from nearby Rosedale Abbey. The cross is used in the symbol of the North York Moors National Park authority.
