The Mighty Steam Locomotive 401 canvas
This powerful steam locomotive, No. 401, was built in 1951 by W.G. Bagnall Ltd for the Steel Company of Wales. It was one of three locomotives designed to prove that steam engines could be as effective as diesel engines. Steam engines were more cost-effective to purchase and run on cheaper coal fuel, but they required more maintenance than diesel engines.
