On the night of 30th May 1943, a German Dornier 217 of 4./NJG 1 Luftwaffe was engaged in combat with Short Stirling EH881 of No. 75 Squadron RAF near Bonn. The Dornier managed to shoot the Stirling down, however the German night fighter was in turn shot down by accurate return fire from the tail gunner of the Stirling.
