Robert Smiths close to Vittoria Dock entrance canvas
Robert Smiths Steel Yard, at the entrance of Vittoria Dock and Close to the East Float of Birkenhead’s Dock system, incorporates Cathcart Quay. Vittoria Dock was built between 1904 and 1908, from land reclaimed during the construction of the Great Float. During its construction on 6 March 1909, a temporary dam collapsed, killing 14 navvies. This incident is now referred to as the Birkenhead Dock Disaster.
