Situated near Torry in Aberdeen and at the entrance to the harbour, Girdleness Lighthouse was designed by Robert Louis Stevenson (grandfather to the author of the same name) and built by James Gibb in 1833. The Lighthouse was built following the sinking of the Oscar in 1813 with the loss of all but 3 of the 43 crew members .
