Pocitelj, Herzegovina canvas
The fortress village of Pocitelj, an Ottoman outpost several miles south of Mostar on the Naretva river. Pocitelj was extensively bombed during the Yugoslav conflict. Following the bombing, many 16th-century works of Islamic art and architecture were destroyed and most of the town's Bosniak population was killed or removed in one of the war's most brutal instances of ethnic cleansing. Nevertheless the village remains the oldest and most significant refuge for artists in the region.
