Whitehaven Harbour and Marina canvas
The first quay to be built here was in 1634 for the export of salt and coal. Imports over the centuries have included tobacco, sugar, spirits and, very occasionally, slaves! The harbour has the distinction of being the only place in England to be attacked by Americans. John Paul Jones raided the port of Whitehaven on 23rd April 1778, during the American War of Independence. The harbour now has a flourishing marina.
