Hidden in the Cowgate canvas
Hidden away among the jumble of buildings in the Cowgate are some wonderful old buildings, two of them are shown here. The square castellated tower with the small spire on top is the tower of the Magadalen Chapel. Built in 1541, Magadalen Chapel also served as a guildhall for the Incorporation of Hammermen. Special features include intact medieval stained glass windows dating from 1550 (the oldest in Scotland) and also detailed arcading dating from 1555.
