Wallingford Riverside canvas
Looking across the River Thames towards the ancient town of Wallingford in Oxfordshire. On the far bank is the church of St Peter with its distinctive, elegant spire. Further on is the bridge linking the town with the village of Crowmarsh Gifford and then the ring road. The bridge is medieval in origin and was constructed when Wallingford Castle (now ruined) was an important royal residence. The bridge as we see it now was partially rebuilt in 1810-12.
