Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol canvas
Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the Avon river gorge in the city of Bristol, and was designed and built by the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Opened in 1864 the bridge is 450 yards long and 331 feet above the water level of the river Avon below. In 1885 22 year old Sarah Ann Hanley survived a fall from the bridge, her billowing skirts acting as a parachute, and subsequently lived into her eighties.
