Darwell Reservoir lies in the north-west corner of the parish of Mountfield, East Sussex. It covers around 154 acres (63.4 hectares) and is just over a mile long. Work began on its construction in about 1937 and was completed in 1949, when it was officially opened by the Duke of Norfolk. When it was filled, 9 cottages, including Birchford Cottages, Darwell Furnace Farm and cottages associated with it, were lost. A pipeway laid in the 1980s takes water to Beauport Park to supply Hastings.
